Pinecrest Boys Wreck Jaguars

Someone coming into James Moore Gym at about 8:15 Wednesday evening might have thought there was a scoreboard malfunction.

It showed the Pinecrest boys in front 40-10 with 2:41 remaining in the second quarter against an Overhills team that was averaging 68.5 points per game. The Patriots (7-2) went on to defeat the Jaguars (4-5) 83-50 for their fifth victory in a row.

Faronte’ Drakeford recorded his second double-double in two nights, and seventh of the season, scoring 14 points while grabbing 10 rebounds. Also in double figures for the Patriots were Phillip Wallace with 13 points, Adam Cummings with 12 and Antonio Jones with 10.

“Obviously, when you’re up 40-10, you’re doing a lot of stuff right or the other team’s not really ready,” Patriot coach Mike Apple said. “I think it was probably a combination of both.”

Apple called his team’s second half performance at Red Springs on Tuesday its best 16 minutes of basketball this season. The Patriots traded the lead several times with the Red Devils late in the second quarter and early in the third before breaking away for an 81-61 victory. They outscored the home team 47-28 after the intermission.

The Pats picked up right from where they left off against Overhills. Starting with a three from the corner by Marshall Smith, they jumped out to an 8-0 lead. Much later, a pair of free throws by Drakeford gave the scoreboard that improbable 40-10 look.

“We didn’t expect that, but I was caught up in the game,” the 6-foot-6 senior said. “I was just happy we were playing so good.”

The visitors never got any closer than 24 points the rest of the way. Cummings made four threes on five attempts. Greg Barnes was another big contributor, scoring a season high nine points. Traivon Williams added eight.

The Patriots made six treys in all. One of the concerns about the Jags was their ability to score from behind the arc. They came in averaging six made threes per game. They were shut out in that department after putting up less than a handful of attempts.

“We knew coming in they shot a lot of threes,” Apple said. “That’s the reason we played exclusively man-to-man defense. We wanted to get a hand up and not give them good looks. Overhills is a team capable of big-time scoring out there.”

The Patriots needed every one of Drakeford’s 19 first half points against Red Springs the night before to take a 34-33 lead into the halftime intermission. Two threes by Smith and 10 points by Antonio Jones helped them build a 60-50 lead going into the last quarter. Drakeford and Jones finished with 21 points apiece. Red Devil star Glenn Patterson was held to 18 points.

The Patriots are idle until Dec. 28 when they will meet Fuquay-Varina in the first round of the Holiday in the Pines Tournament at Pinecrest.
