Moore Stockings Need Filling This Year

The 2010 Empty Stocking Fund is again helping needy families throughout Moore County.

As in past years, each sponsored family will have a brighter Christmas with help from others in the community.

The Empty Stocking Fund of Moore County, an all-volunteer effort sponsored by the Sandhills Military Officers Association of America, matches families in need with organizations and individuals willing to be sponsors.

They purchase gifts for each member of the household based on a wish list gathered through interviews conducted by volunteers in September. The gifts are wrapped and personally delivered, along with a food voucher, to the home before Christmas.

Others in the community act as "willing hands" volunteers who purchase and deliver gifts using funds from those who prefer to contribute money. For instance, the Southern Pines Rotary Club has agreed to take nearly 50 families under its wing this year.

"The Rotary has really stepped forward this year," said Bob Hopkins, co-chairman of the Empty Stocking Fund this year. "Each Rotary Club volunteer is contributing time and effort buying presents with donated Fund contributions, wrapping the gifts and hand-delivering them to grateful families. The Pinehurst Rotary Chapter has also stepped forward to sponsor families this year."

Other sponsors include churches, businesses, high school groups and neighborhood groups as well as individuals.

"The economy has made this year's fundraising campaign a challenge," Hopkins said. "That's why we really appreciate the help of The Pilot in assisting to spread the word out to the community. Any donation amount will help brighten the holidays for the many families who need us this year. We thank our Moore County neighbors for their generous support. "
