One week.

That’s all that stands between one of our Pick ’Em contestants and glory (and the $200 grand prize). It’s been a really tight battle all season long, so it’s fitting that the 2010 edition of The Pilot’s Football Contest comes down to the final week.

The penultimate week in the contest — Week 12 — wasn’t an easy one to figure out. Most of our pickers ended up with between seven and nine correct. Indianapolis, Washington, Philadelphia and Denver losing seemed to throw off a lot of people.

None of the college games were easy to figure out either. Not many of you thought N.C. State would lose with an ACC Atlantic Division championship on the line, and most picked Oklahoma State in the Bedlam showdown. LSU-Arkansas was a toss-up. Most had the ’Noles over the Gators.

It’s amazing how the scores vary from one week to the next. Last week we had three 15s lead the pack with a ton of 14s and 13s. But this week there were only three — count ’em, three — 12s. The tiebreaker this week was the Chicago-Philly game, which Da Bears won 31-26 for a total of 57 points.

Rich Wingfield finished first this week, picking 12 games correctly and guessing 56 points, just one off the correct score. Cecil Blake was second, guessing 52 points, and Craig Reaser was third guessing 49 points.

A top-three finish couldn’t have come at a better time for Reaser, who is now tied for the overall lead with Velma Davis at 128 points. Mae Little is one point behind at 127.

We can only award one grand prize. In the event of a tie in the overall standings, we will have a “playoff” and have the contestants tied for the lead pick a slate of games the following week. The person with the highest score will be the overall winner.

We will notify those involved if that happens.
