Sports Briefs: Lady Vikes Tennis Off to 3-0 Start

With a 9-0 Cape Fear Valley Conference shutout victory against Overhills, the Union Pines girls' tennis team improved to 3-0 on the year.
The visiting Vikings won 84 of the total 87 games in Wednesday's league match.
They are now 2-0 in conference play this season.
Sophomores Madison Kramer and Laura Cameron, junior Virginia Priest and senior Shannon Simpson all swept their singles matches 10-0.
Union Pines' No. 1 player, sophomore Melissa Tally, prevailed by a 10-1 score. Tally later teamed with Kramer to win 8-1 in doubles.
With two triumphs apiece in the tilt, Kramer notched career-victory 36 and Tally picked up her 35th career win.
Meanwhile Gabrielle Roback, Celine Bullock and Michelle Shireman scored their initial victories as Lady Vikings.
Roback and Shireman paired up in doubles for an 8-0 shutout, while Bullock teamed with Elena D'Argenio to earn an 8-1 win.
Union Pines travels to Hope Mills on Monday for a league match against Gray's Creek, before making its home debut in a conference contest with the Western Harnett Eagles at 4:30 p.m. at the John C. Frye Tennis Facility.
N.M. Tennis Gets First Win
The North Moore girls' tennis team won its first match of the season Wednesday, sweeping South Davidson 9-0.
In singles competition, Shannon Marley def. C. Krayniewsk 7-6, (7-2), 6-0; Camilla Cockman def. L. Miller 6-1,6-0; Ciera McDonald def. K Shelton 6-3, 7-5; Clarissa Gomez def. A. Colense 6-1, 6-3; Julie Williams def. K. Martin 6-0, 6-0; Monica Ritter def. T. Hedrick 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles, Marley and Cockman def. Krayniewsk and Shelton 8-0; McDonald and Maria Urquiza def. Miller and Colense 8-1; and Williams and April Warren def. Martin and Hedrick 8-0.
North Moore improves to 1-3 on the season. The Mustangs' next match is Monday at home against Gray Stone.
Pinecrest Volleyball Rolling
Pinecrest improved to 6-0 with a 30-28, 25-20 and 25-14 sweep of Overhills at James Moore Gym Thursday evening.
Addysen George recorded 12 kills and five digs. Janea Williams contibuted 10 kills and two blocks.
Also for the Patriots, Felicia Painter had four kills and two blocks, Keegan Lynch had 13 assists and four digs and Ashleigh McKenzie was credited with eight assists and three digs.
O'Neal Beats Carolina Friends
The O'Neal School varsity boys' soccer team scored a road victory against former conference foe Carolina Friends Thursday.
The Falcons opened strong, according to coach Ted Hassenfelt, maintaining possession and out-shooting the home team for the first 10 minutes. But 20 minutes into the game, Carolina Friends found the back of the net off an uncleared corner kick.
The Falcons responded before the end of the half when Bryce Baldelli was taken down inside the penalty area at the 34-minute mark. He converted the penalty kick to tie the score.
Baldelli netted the game winner eight minutes into the second half when he took a pass from Jacob Talbert, beat the last defender and put the ball in the corner of the net.
O'Neal controlled the game for the remainder of the contest, outshooting Carolina Friends 21 to 5.
Ryan Williams put the final touch on the victory with a header finish off a Rick Catania corner kick at the 70th minute mark.
O'Neal moves to 4-2 on the season, and opens conference play against Cape Fear this Tuesday at Mauser Field.
