The Sunrise Theater's SunFlix Series presents its last movie of August, "Winter's Bone," winner of the 2010 Sundance Best Picture (Grand Jury Prize), beginning Friday, Aug. 27, and continuing through Monday, Aug. 31. Shows are scheduled for weekdays at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday features at 2:30, 5 and 7:30 p.m. This drama is rated R and runs for 1 hour and 40 minutes. The film stars Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes, Kevin Breznahan, Dale Dickey and Garret Dillahunt.

The following plot summary is derived from the film's official website: "Seventeen-year-old Ree Dolly sets out to track down her father, who put their house up for his bail bond and then disappeared. If she fails, Ree and her family will be turned out into the Ozark woods. Challenging her outlaw kin's code of silence and risking her life, Ree hacks through the lies, evasions and threats offered up by her relatives and begins to piece together the truth."

Based on the novel by Daniel Woodrell, "Winter's Bone" was filmed entirely on location in the Ozarks of Southwestern Missouri.

Steven Rea of the Philadelphia Inquirer writes, "It's been a long time since a film has conveyed a culture, and a sense of place, with such telling precision. At the same time, 'Winter's Bone' thrums with suspense."

Roger Ebert of The Chicago Sun Times gives the movie four stars, his highest rating, and states, "The movie heroes who affect me most are not extroverted. They don't strut, speechify and lead armies. They have no superpowers. They are ordinary people who are faced with a need and rise to the occasion. Ree Dolly is such a hero."

The historic Sunrise Theater, located at 250 NW Broad St., in Southern Pines, is nonprofit. Ticket prices are $7 for all shows. Refreshments, including beer and wine, are available, and all movies are commercial free.
