Commissioners Endorse Industrial Mega-Site

The Moore County Board of Commissioners on Monday night unanimously endorsed a collaborative effort with Montgomery County for development of an industrial mega-site spanning about 3,000 contiguous acres in the two counties.

Ray Ogden, executive director of Partners in Progress, said he and his counterpart with the Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation spearheaded the project five years ago but the project gathered momentum in the past year.

“This is a unique opportunity,” Ogden said.

Ogden said the industrial park has the potential to create thousands of jobs in the two counties in coming years and representatives a major opportunity for economic growth.

The site is located in the northwestern corner of Moore County and the eastern corner of Montgomery County. It is roughly situated between N.C. 24-27 and Spies Road near Interstate 73-74 (U.S. 220).

Commissioner Nick Picerno made the motion to approve a resolution endorsing the initiative, which, for the time being, carries no financial obligation on the part of the county.

More information about the meeting will appear in the print version of The Pilot.

Just as I posted on the first article on the park, maybe this is the opportunity to utilize the two previously awarded $500,000 STAG grants, one for Robbins and one for Moore County, to address water needs in the northern end of the county. Get water to the Park, and jump start the Northwest Moore Water District.

SoPinesNo1 - they'll need more than water lines. For an industrial site you need natural gas/propane, and the pipelines are nowhere near that area.

A man who lives and owns land in the middle of the proposed Industrial Park told me he was a deputy sheriff in Montgomery County for 20 years. He is fighting the Industrial Park because he does not want to sell out. He said everyone and every sheriff in Montgomery County knows that the Industrial Park is just a cover to build a Federal Penitentiary. He also said they are just hoping to get the infrastructure built to start it with Moore County and Montgomery County money.

So, a case of bait and switch. So much for your 'green' industrial park. Not my words but his. His imagination? True? I have no idea but it seems to me an Industrial Park out in the middle of nowhere in this economy would not make it that I am sure of.

Plumblevel do you want to see anything good happen in this county. I know most of the Law Enforcement people in Montgomery County tell me his name and I am going to call him and see what he said. Did you read the article, it says this industrial park has the potential to create thousands of jobs. In this economy I think it is worth a shot if there is a possibility of putting people back to work. We need the tax money to pay for our new Detention center.

silentbob "We need tax money to pay for our new Detention Center". You said it all right there. Picerno said if the DC does not pay for itself it will be "court ordered taxes".When is the next property reevaluation?

I am not against a Federal Prison in this "Industrial Park" on its 3,000 acres. At least it is not in the middle of a town next to a public library, children's ballfield, and an elementary school like Carthage. I am for new jobs in Moore County. I just do not like being lied to. I also do not like the idea of Moore County going into the criminal business when crime is down or Moore County investing into the infrastructure of a Federal Penitentiary. Very risky in this economy and dangerous bringing more criminals to Moore. An Industrial Park on the other hand, if that is true, I am all for it.

realbldr I agree Mr. Ogden must know something we are not privy too. In this economy ??????? The fact that they are pushing it as a "green project" is very nice but I wondered if it was just a good PR ploy for now. Also skeptical.

Plumblevel you keep saying a federal prison where is that going to be. We are building a Detention center. I am suprised that Toda has not put this in a blog already but look at facts, when the economy is slow or down crime is up. Just look at the crime we have had in Moore County in the past 2 months. I am sure you are not against the detention center being put here because it ain't close to your house in Carthage. I am not sure what lie you are talking about but we have all been lied to before so that is not something you can't get over. All I am saying on both of these issues is, if it will help get unemployed people back to work in Moore and even Montgomery county I am willing to support the idea. Even if it means paying a little more in taxes to help other people in this county. Whether you like it or not every goverment is in the criminal business. We are charged with keeping our communities safe and with that comes the responsibility of having somewhere to house the criminals. I don't like some of it any better than you do but those are the facts.

silentbob Look at the FBI national statistics if you claim you are LE. Nationwide crime is down in this very slow economy. Look at the Pilots article they published on Crime being down. Go to NPR.com type in Crime Down to get the FBI statistics and stories on why crime is down. Better to reread what I wrote since you are missing my point.

I am not missing your point. I am in LE so I am not going to discuss the crime rate with you because I know that is just another attempt by you to spin some negative information on the new detention center. This is the point of this article. If this indurtrial site can bring jobs to the local area it is worth giving some serious consideration to. That is the point. I happen to agree with realbldr there always seems to be a hidden agenda but we have to go with the plan and hope for the best until we find out otherwise.
