Among high school football coaches, the philosophies on scrimmages vary.
Some scrimmage against other squads as much as possible, while others hold to the traditional route of one scrimmage event.
Among the Moore County squads, Pinecrest and Union Pines are slated to participate in two preseason scrimmages, while North Moore has a lone jamboree on the schedule.
Thursday morning and evening scrimmages highlight this week’s activities for Pinecrest.
The Patriots entertain Jack Britt, Broughton and Douglas Byrd in the morning preseason tests that begin at 9 a.m.
Later, coach Chris Metzger’s squad travels to Fayetteville State for the annual Cumberland County Short Stop Jamboree, where scrimmages beginning at 5 p.m. between Pine Forest and Hoke County and Goldsboro and East Columbus. Pinecrest and Cape Fear meet in one of the 6 p.m. contests.
The admission fee for the jamboree is $5 per person. In addition to Hoke County, other 2010 opponents of Pinecrest participating in the Short Stop Jamboree include Overhills and Western Harnett. Other participants include Jack Britt, Douglas Byrd, West Bladen, Westover, Seventy-First, Clinton, E.E. Smith, South View, Terry Sanford and Gray's Creek.
The Patriots are scheduled to open the season at Enloe Aug. 20.

Meet the Vikings Night is slated for the following night at 6 p.m. According to Union Pines athletic director Bobby Purvis, all of the Vikings’ fall teams will be in attendance, so supporters and fans are encouraged to attend.
Around 6:30 p.m., the football team, led by second-year head coach Ryan Riggan, will scrimmage West Columbus.
The Vikings are scheduled to open the season hosting Red Springs on Aug. 20.
North Moore, under the direction of new head coach Greg Simmons, has only one scrimmage event on the schedule ahead of its Aug. 27 opener hosting Princeton.
