Fairway Notebook: Two Make First Aces

Hole-in-One: Bob Kirby, a member of Foxfire, recorded the first ace of his career on July 23 while playing on the East Course.

It came on the 155-yard second hole, and he used his 3-wood to reach the green. His playing partners were Bill Facey and John Hall.

John Shaughnessy, a member at Beacon Ridge, made his first hole-in-one on July 23. It was on hole No. 5, 140 yards, and he used his 6-iron to reach the green. Dick Osborne, George Deignan and Greg Lookabaugh were his playing partners.

Pinetop: The competition was held at Southern Pines on July 15 with the following results:

On July 16, the game was the July Ace Day Gross and Net on the Maples Course. Darla Howe won low gross with 89. Dot Dube carded a 68 net and Barb McCleneghen had net 73.

Longleaf: The Men’s Golf Association played on July 7 in a Stableford Tournament, one point for a net par, two for a net birdie and three for a net eagle. Richard Hallman shot 75 gross/59 net for 30 Stableford points.

On July 14, the game was again Stableford with two septuagenarians posting the following scores: Ted Gleason, 79 gross/63 net, for 27 Stableford points. Fred Schrank, 80 gross/61 net, for 28 Stableford points.

Whispering Pines: The Ninettes and Pinettes played a mixed modified Captain’s Choice Tournament on July 26 and the prizes were logo Whispering Pines wine glasses and bottles of wine. The winners: Eloise Burns, Sandy Gerdes, Pat Linss, Pam Venet, 24.75; Sandra Grose, Sandy Hallet, Sandy O’Malley, Barbara Tompkins, 26.5; Mary Jane Barth, Dot DeMasi, Nancy Derrick, Val Flahie, 26.75.

The Pinettes played on July 26 in a Low Net Tournament with the following winners:

National: The Women’s Golf Association played on July 21 and the game was “Lois’ Choice” the best 12 net holes. The winners: Susan Courneya, 48; Tricia Knight, tied at 49, with Kathy Fiske; Lynne Frazier, 50.

The Men’s Golf Association played on July 24 with the following results: Super Skins — Rick Knight, 2; Jeff Huber, 2; John Doster, 1. Stableford — Giff Fisher, +6; Jeff Huber, +4.

Midland: The Men’s Golf Association played a Nassau Tournament on July 28, and the format was two best balls of the foursome. Overall winners: 18 holes — Harvey Koonce, Art Gula, Steve Zachary, Ted Meyer, 116. Steve Zachary won low gross wih 76.

In a Nine-Hole Skins Game, Bill Crenson, Charles Childers and Chuck Crum each earned one. Bill Crenson won low gross with 29.

Whispering Woods: The Men’s Golf Association played a team event and the scoring was rotated through red, white and blue flags, scoring one, two and three net balls. The winning team was Blake Hetterich, Steve Luckhaus and Bill Woodruff at 126.

In an event played on July 28, the team event was two low gross and one low net on each hole. Bud Henty, Blake Hetterich, Steve Luckhaus and Bill Woodruff scored 213.

Woodlake: The Lady Niners played on July 26, and the game was par-4 holes only on the Maples Course.

Flight A — Bev Lawson, 19; Norma Loase, 22; Roberta Danielson, 25.

Longleaf: The Men’s Golf Association played on July 28 in a Stableford Tournament. Net pars were worth one point, net birdies two points and net eagles three points. The winners: Ted Buschman, 24 points; Fred Schrank, tied at 23 points, with Hugh Mensch.

The Longleaf Ladies played on July 22 in a Stableford Tournament. Joan Baldwin won with 39 points. Carol McDaniel birdied No. 12 and Betty Crowder No. 15.

On July 29, the Longleaf Ladies played a game of one best net on holes 1-6, two on holes 7-12 and three on holes 13-18. The winners: Nancy Evans, Matti Jakobsen, Dale Saenz, 134. Carol Crook, Jan Fisher, Christine Carter, 138. Diane Steele birdied No. 12.

Beacon Ridge: The Beaconettes played on July 29 in a foursome scramble. The winners were: Susan Schurr, Carole Skau, Alice Shaughnessy, Barbara True, 41; Pat Blaire, Ann Doster, Linda Talbot, Marge Lambert, 43.
