Scott Huler will be the featured speaker at the April 24th Friends of the Library Literary Luncheon held at the Pinehurst Member’s Club.

A prolific and eclectic writer, Huler has written about his lifelong love affair with the Cleveland Browns, his interest in NASCAR, and with his study of the Beaufort Scale, he taps into his love of science and clear expression.

A resident of Raleigh, he has written for many newspapers such as The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Los Angeles Times, has been a teaching fellow at the University of Michigan, and is a frequent guest on such programs such as “North Carolina Book Watch,” “Day to Day” and “Marketplace.”

Huler and his wife, June Spence, also an author, frequently read and present at area bookstores. His book “On the Grid” will be out in paperback in May.

Huler’s most recent book, “No Man’s Land: One Man’s Odyssey Through the Odyssey,” recounts his retracing of Odysseus’ journey. After reading “Ulysses” by James Joyce, he found himself much more interested in Homer’s epic poem that inspired Joyce: the story of Odysseus and his travels.

Soon the 44-year-old Huler, similar in age to Odysseus, found himself in the Mediterranean, tracing the voyage of Odysseus from Troy to Ithaca as a lone traveler on his own epic journey.

“The Friends of the Library believe Mr. Huler, who calls himself a ‘generalist writer,’ will be an interesting and provocative speaker, as he will speak about his diverse subjects and how he came to write about them,” says a spokesman.

Tickets for the luncheon are $25, and are available at the Given Memorial Library in Pinehurst and at the Given Book Shop in Olmsted Village.
