Union Pines' baseball team fell 2-1 in nine innings Tuesday at Gray's Creek.

Senior Brandon Browne pitched nine innings to get the win for the Bears (13-1, 7-0 Cape Fear Valley 3A Conference).

He allowed three hits and one run through three innings of play and then retired the final 18 batters in order. He finished with 15 strikeouts.

Sophomore Nic Collins pitched eight innings for Union Pines (9-9, 4-3) in a no-decision. He allowed one run on four hits and five walks, while striking out 10.

Sophomore Justin Allred pitched the bottom of the ninth. He allowed the first runner to reach base with a walk. That would be the eventual game-winning run, as Cole Hunter scored on a throwing error by Vike catcher Dylan Kelly on a double steal attempt with two outs.

Union Pines took a 1-0 led in the top of the third. Freshman Noble Davis led the frame off with a walk and scored when Collins delivered a chopper that bounced over the first baseman's head and into right field.

Gray's Creek answered in their half of the sixth. With one out, Collins issued back-to-back walks, before Hunter drove in the tying run on a sacrifice fly.

Whoever was covering this game is mistaken. Need to actually WATCH the game, because there was no throwing error, there was no sacrafice fly, there was only two errors that led to Grays Creek scoring two runs. As for the pitching, maybe you, the reporter, should be put in bottom of the 9th and try to throw strikes, easier said than done. Union Pines is a TEAM, NOT A ONE MAN SHOW, PLEASE REMEMBER THAT!!!! If you recall, the last time UP played Grays Creek, we were run ruled!!! Yes, we did have very good pitching for this game, but you forget also, all the plays that were made in the field by the TEAM, to keep us in the game!! If you are going to continue covering these games, please make sure to cover the whole game!!! And focus on the TEAM!!! Because that is what UP Baseball is all about. . . . . . . . . .TEAM WORK!!! There is a lot of credit that should be given that was not, especially for those playing the field!!!! So please acknowlege the WHOLE TEAM when covering these games!!!!!

Timothy, I don't know what game you were watching or how many times you have read a column by Mr. Manning, but you are totally out of order with your comments. For your information this was probably a web update that I believe was posted after the game.

If you truly read all articles by Mr. Manning, regardless of the sport. you would realize just how absurd your comments really are. Last time I checked once your graduate from high school you lose your eligibility to pitch in the last inning.

I was at the game and watched every pitch; it was one of the best high school games in recent memory. Each one of the starting pitchers threw over 130 pitches and the majority of them were strikes. Justin did a good job in relief and the UP team lost on a hustle play by both the offense and the defense; that's how most great ballgames end. I took a great feeling from the game as did most folks.

Mr. Manning does a great job covering UP sports and to my knowledge he has always been fair and equal to all players who distinguish themselves on the playing field. And, just who do you think is the one man team? Franco has interviewed and heralded several players recently, including pitchers, catchers, infielders and outfielders, so exactly who are you saying is the one man team? The entire team is made up of great kids who are both talented and respectful; man you are way of base....... Excuse the pun. Peace.
