Sandhills Community College will hold the second annual "Love Your Mother Green Summit" on Wednesday.

This special event will provide area residents with a host of ideas enabling them to "go green."

This free event is a collaborative effort of the Sandhills Community College Health and Wellness Committee, the Sandhills Community College Green Committee and the Sandhills Horticultural Society. It is timed to commemorate the first Earth Day celebration, held April 22, 1970.

The summit events will begin with a keynote address by Roger Mercer, columnist for The Fayetteville Observer. Mercer's talk, "Deep in the Garden," will begin at 9 a.m. in the G. Victor and >Margaret Ball Visitor's Center of the Sandhills Horticultural Gardens.

Many exhibits will be displayed in the Sandhills Horticultural Gardens. Some include landscaping with drought-tolerant plants, gardening for honeybees, sustainable insect management, plant propagation, backyard vegetable gardening and farm up the street.

The Sandhills Farmers Green Market will also be available for the purchase of locally grown food items.

College faculty, staff and students will offer chair massages, breathing assessments, yoga, a relaxation station, fitness evaluations and health assessments.

"Special thanks goes to Progress Energy for their sponsorship," said Lori Williams, director of community education and outreach and coordinator of the Green Summit. "It is very difficult to host an event of this caliber and magnitude without the necessary resources. Progress Energy has been on board from our initial meetings two years ago and helped to fund this very worthwhile community event."

Since the majority of this special day will be held outdoors, a rain date of Wednesday, April 28, has been set.
