Creation of the proposed Cypress Pointe Fire/Rescue looks like a good idea whose day has come.
Merger of Circle V (Vass) and Cameron fire departments and Vass Rescue Squad, if undertaken properly, could set the pace for future consolidations.
First among the expected benefits is efficiency, with speedier response. Rural areas are severely challenged when it comes to rapid response to everything from heart attacks and lost children to home fires and wrecks. Supporters believe response time can be reduced by combining assets and tightening administration.
Traffic is always a problem in municipal areas, but distance cancels that advantage when the emergency occurs in rural areas many miles from a hospital.
Supporters of the merger also project big savings when it comes to the fire service district tax. The three districts overlap, and firefighters and rescue workers in all three districts frequently respond to the same emergency call. It makes sense that a consolidated administration would sharply improve efficiency.
Further, the concept of streamlining emergency service districts falls in line with recommendations contained in a countywide 2004 study by a private consultant specializing in local government services and facilities.
Cypress Pointe did not happen overnight. The proposal is the result of careful planning by leaders of the three units over a period of years.
The name Cypress Pointe reflects the nexus where corners of the three districts come together and has a rustic, almost poetic ring. It brings to mind a rural setting and a reminder that Moore County has trees other than pines. The name also remembers historic Cypress Presbyterian Church.
Thoughtful planning and administration should resolve any objections that may arise by incorporating the best qualities of all three units. Cypress Pointe has the potential to set the best possible example in efficiency and compassionate service.
