Freshman Michael McGowan, of Southern Pines, shot a final round 66 to help the UNC men’s golf team win the championship at last week’s Wolfpack Intercollegiate.

The O’Neal School graduate bounced back from a first-round 81 to finish in a tie for seventh place individually with a 54-hole total of 81-70-66—217. His five-under par 66 on the Lonnie Poole Golf Course at N.C. State (7,358 yards) included seven birdies and two bogies.

The son of Pat and Bonnie McGowan has played in two U.S. Junior Amateurs and two U.S. Amateurs in his golf career. He was one shot off the course record of 65 on the Lonnie Poole layout that opened in July of 2009.

Two other Tar Heel players with local connections finished in the top 20. Sophomore Jack Fields, of Southern Pines, came in 18th after shooting 77-71-72—220. The Pinecrest graduate has competitive rounds of 63 (Bridgestone Collegiate) and 66 (Seminole Intercollegiate) this year.

Junior Henry Zaytoun III, of Raleigh, whose grandparents, Hal and Betsy Hyde, live in Southern Pines, finished in a tie for seventh after posting 73-74-71—217. Sophomore Patrick Barrett, of Pinehurst, is also a member of the team.

The 48th-ranked Tar Heels (Golfweek-Sagarin) won the 17-team event by seven strokes over second-place Duke. They finished in front of three ACC teams that were ranked ahead of them nationally in Florida State (13th), Duke (23rd) and N.C. State (32nd).

The Tar Heels return to action at the ACC Championships held at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C., on April 23-25. Fields carries the third best stroke average in the ACC (71.75), while Zaytoun is 10th (72.73) and McGowan is 26th (73.5). The leader at 71.15 is Ben Kohles, of Virginia.
