Pinecrest High School will host its annual middle school spring debate tournament Saturday, May 1, beginning at 9 a.m.
Each year, students from local middle schools that are part of AIG programs can prepare for this tournament with the help of their schools' coach. Many events are being offered this year.
The debate event being offered is public forum debate, in which teams of two people debate a purposed resolution. This year's resolution given to the students is: "Resolved: >All students in United States public schools shall be required to wear school uniforms."
Other events being offered are performance events such as dramatic interpretation, humorous interpretation and duo interpretation. In each of these events students prepare and memorize a piece from a literary work and then act it out.
Food will be for sale throughout the day at the tournament, and visitors are welcome. The tournament is being coordinated by Josephine Yurcaba, a senior at Pinecrest, as the product of her senior project.
Registration for each student is $10.
Those wishing more information or who would like to register should contact Libby Carter, debate coach at Pinecrest, at (910) 692-6554, or Josephine Yurcaba, this year's tournament director, at (910) 783-5182. Registration forms and other information can also be obtained from the Pinecrest Debate Web site at www.pinecrestdebate.org.
