An act of vandalism left Pinecrest High School with a new name over the weekend.

Vandals removed and broke the large green letters “P,” “E” and “R” that spell out the school’s name on the front wall above the entrance of the main building. The remaining letters now spell out “Incest High School.”

Assistant Principal Herb Hanson said the school’s administration is not amused by the supposed “prank.” Each broken letter costs $100 to replace.

“It’s a shame because that’s money that could be spent on other things for the kids,” Hanson said.

Hanson called the act a little “more simplistic” compared to a previous prank on the school “that required a little more thought.”

Last month, unidentified members of the school’s senior class erected a sign in front of the school advertising that the school, including buildings, staff and students were for sale.

Senior pranks are a tradition at Pinecrest, but the school has guidelines in place for what constitutes a “prank.”

Students must have their prank approved by a responsible adviser and the act cannot be destructive or harmful in any way.

Hanson said the school is pursuing the incident as an act of vandalism.

“This one isn’t as much fun for us as the other one,” Hanson said. “The other one was very well done, well executed. This one, not so much.”

I like this senior prank better! Ha just kidding! It's not funny when someone has to pay.

Pretty stupid. I'm not sure if it would be funny either way, but someone could have done the same "prank" by covering up the letters with paper or fabric rather than causing any damage. Something similar has been done to the "Hollywood" sign in L.A. a number of times without hurting anything http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywoo...

Some people just have no respect for others' property.

I don't think they thought things through when doing this. And coming up with "incest"? That is tacky.

I doubt very seriously this was a planned senior prank....more likely it's an act of vandalism enacted by some drop out....hopefully some security camera recorded the event or a witness will step forward and the perpetrators will be caught....

One thing is certain. Whoever did this prank was no dummy. If caught the person (or persons) should be required to pay the cost to repair the sign, period. Don't suspend, don't charge, don't make public those involved.

@ Getalife-Why shouldn't the responsible party be charged with vandalism? If it was a "senior prank", it obviously didn't follow the rules regarding pranks, and did actually damage school property. The same rules should apply to that person(s) as it would to the rest of the world responsible for such an act. The sad thing is, if Pinecrest follows previous examples, the responsible party won't be charged, just suspended a few days and told they have to rat out some other troublemakers.

From the picture above isn't that a CCTV warning sign to the left of the main entrance door? Maybe the camera's were able to record this act of vandalism. "A picture is worth a thousand words"! It appears that one would have to use a ladder to commit this act. 2010 and no adequate security camera's to record illegal actions "AT THE MAIN ENTRANCE DOOR"? This at a school that has had the nickname of "Crimecrest" for several years at rivial high schools! Pinecrest administration looks like you are going to have to step up your efforts if you plan to stay one step ahead of these pranksters. Crime prevention is just that a preventive measure to stop crime before it happens. At least they "spelleed corectly"! Ha!!!!! ;)

That made me laugh out loud. It's funny, but too bad they cost the school so much money. Next time, think about it a bit more, and do something less costly kids lol

I don't think it was a "drop out" who did this. A drop out couldn't have figured out how to rearrange the letters to spell incest. :)

They didn't have to rearrange the letters... just eliminate some.

Not the worst prank... our youth are showing more creativity than the typical vandal at least. Not the easiest thing to pull of either.

This prank is not cool at all. The person(s) should pay for their crime and also for not asking for approval by an adviser before doing it. After all, vandalism is a crime.

if you don't think this is funny......you need to re-evaluate your life. sense of humor is a good thing

@yada It might have been funny if they had pulled it off without causing several hundred dollars in property damage. A few bucks worth of scrap fabric from a fabric store or a few pieces of grey posterboard and some tape could have delivered an equally effective "prank."

Of course, one does not get the same "sneaky thrill" from the "prank" if they leave out the vandalism element, but that's for the criminologists to elaborate on. Try Katz' "Seductions of Crime."

<p>@csmithson....yea well of course it would have been nice if they sent 300 dollars - but if they had used "posterboard" or "cloth" it wouldn't have made the paper - and we wouldn't have talked about it. yes....okay it was wrong. I wouldn't want my children doing it - but it was funny.

oh my goodness... i now live in Detroit Michigan. You will not believe what made the local radio show news. One DJ made a comment about a school senior class costing the school around 57k for a senior prank. As i'm listening to this discussion they starting talking about a school named Pinecrest. In the back of my mind im saying "no way" it can not be my old high schoo. As i am laughing at what this dj was talking about. I finally realized that "YES" it was Pinecrest High School in Pinehurst, NC. They talked about how the students put the school up for sale and took down some letters in the school name. Im laughing hysterically. My hat goes off to the Class of 2010...... I know it cost some money as all senior pranks do and not every senior class thinks of that... But i must say that it was funny.
