The Pilot put a temporary freeze on comments on this Web site last night. The exchange got more than a little out of control, and enough was enough.
Anyone registering for this Web site agrees to our terms of use. Click here to see a copy of them. Last night, several users posting comments that blatantly violated this agreement, and the decision was made to suspend the comment option to allow for a cooling-off period.
We're taking another shot at this by turning the comment portion of the site back on today.
Simply put, here is the deal: The user is responsible for his or her comments, and the comments must adhere to the terms of use. Comments that do not meet the guidelines will be deleted. Anyone who violates the terms of use repeatedly risks being banned from posting comments.

Can you not just refrain from coming back or delete yourself?

WOW....I missed it.....haven't been on the site for several days because of the types of comments you are referring to! The newspaper you publish is edited before it is sold to the public, therefore, I suppose you have the right to edit comments that are posted on 'your' website.
I have a facebook fan page and I allow comments from all my fans, BUT.....if a fan posted something that was inappropriate then I would delete it.
Thanks for not turning the 'Comment' section off entirely!

I have only been reading the comment section for a couple of days now and I believe the right decision was made. When you have 50 comments and the majority of them are bickering comments between posters, that's ridiculous! People are getting away from the article that they are commenting about. Time to grow up!

The guidelines are long overdue!

@coffecreme:"Can you not just refrain from coming back or delete yourself?" There you go. Site reopens and a link to "terms of use" is highlighted only to be there for other posters'. I agree with Expat - too many trolls and teabaggers who challenge everyone's opinions not in keeping with their own. Too many who are quick to call someone else ignorant, when their comments are questionable.
The Pilot could have added controls (to this opportunity) for the public to provide opinions and observations; now, the bloggist-sphere is sanitized to the point where links may not be provided in support one's views or add credibility to one's thread. Perhaps you should just shut the site down and go back to The Pilots' version of what is and what isn't news worthy; and allow a few to submit Letters to the Editor representing the view of 1/100,000. Political candidates would really like this approach, because now we can't express our disdain for the worthless individuals running for office.

My two cents: perhaps now there will be fewer personal attacks on those who express an opinion not in keeping with the trolls and baggers. These are terms used on internet discussion boards for those who are new to db's. As I see it, anyone can make a statement without having to qualify their statement. Just toss something out there whether it is real, or imagined, and for goodness sakes, don't say anything that may lead to a discussion on issues. I think that Pilot staff should write the articles and then discuss them amongst themselves and let the rest of us peek in occasionally. Control the Boards!

I have no idea what was said or what happened but come on guys, this happens in every forum every week. The purpose is to generate interest and people saying flammable comments generate interest. Ban one person and two more appear, ban those two then four show up. If you really don't want folks arguing just shut down the comment sections right now before anyone else feelings get hurt.

ok, I promise to try to be nice - please stop with the "teabaggers" word; everyone knows what that term refers to - and it isn't pretty. If you don't agree with the TEA party, then that's ok, and your perogative - but it's derogatory terms like that which get people upset in the first place.
For those of you who actually don't know what "teabaggers" is in reference too, I would explain but it would be VERY inapproprate; Just google "teabagging" and read for yourself...
I personally don't agree with everything the TEA movement stands for, but I don't coin them with a sexual term...

RmeMP: the TEA partiers brought the term on themselves:

But what do you expect from people protesting "Obama's High Taxes" when he'd cut taxes for 95% or working families?

Colesue21 ~ I for one wouldn't care to see you go and I'll leave it at that. If you have a FB try CNN Discussion Boards. The only problem are the teabaggers and trolls. Here's an explanation of tea-baggers in the political sense: "Tea Bagger isn't near as bad as the Tea Baggers themselves calling the United States of America's President "Socialist," "Communist," "Witch Doctor," Calling for his days to be "Short," among other hateful things..and racist comments. That is hate speech."
That term also is applicable to those on db (discussion boards) who use a board to object or oppose anyone whose opinions or points of view differ from theirs. This term has been around for a couple years now on boards with more experienced bloggers. Hang in there and hope to see you on a board where one can express their opinions without censorship.
