Falcons Win in Volleyball, Tennis

The O'Neal School girls' varsity tennis team traveled to Harrells Christian Academy on Tuesday afternoon and came away with a solid 8-1 victory.

After losing a close battle at No. 1 singles, the Falcons rebounded and won the remaining eight matches to move their record to 6-2. At No. 1 singles Brianna Ek lost a tough match to Ashley Kersey 6-4, 4-6, (10-5).

Other match results: Katie Jenkins defeated Katie Robinson 6-0, 6-2;, Amelia Schirmer defeated Eliza Roberts 6-0, 6-1; Mary Garner defeated Carol Johnson 6-0, 6-0; Virginia Scarpa came back from a first set loss to win another tiebreaker over Ann Davis 2-6, 7-6(3), (10-3); and Victoria Scarpa defeated Stephan Cranford 6-0, 6-0. In an exhibition match Greyson Keel defeated Maria Schulte 8-0.

In doubles, Ek and Jenkins defeated Kersey and Robinson 8-1, Schirmer and Garner defeated Roberts and Johnson 8-6 and Scarpa and Scarpa defeated Davis and Crawford 8-1.

The win moved O'Neal to 2-1 in the Cape Fear Independent Conference. Harrells dropped to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in conference.

The Falcons will play at Village Christian on Thursday.

Falcons Win in Volleyball

The O'Neal varsity volleyball team defeated Harrells Academy Tuesday in four games, 25-16, 25-18, 17-25, and 25-15. The win came following a week off for class trips. Katherine Kelly had three blocks. Alex DiMaggio added 13 kills and Kate Fedder recorded seven digs. The Falcons also had 15 service aces.

The Falcons will play the defending state champion Village Christian on Oct. 1. The team's next home game is 5:15 p.m. Oct. 6.
