The Interfaith Food Pantry in Aberdeen was beneficiary of a contribution presented by the Sandhills Classic Street Rod Association recently. The money was raised at this year's Carthage Buggy Festival and by other activities of the car club throughout the year.

Marie Lomac of the Interfaith Food Pantry was on hand to accept the $1,500 donation from Tom Murray, president of the Sandhills Classics.

The Interfaith Food Pantry is an all-volunteer organization that began providing food to folks in need seven years ago. Food is available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday at 110 Knight Street, Aberdeen.

"Need for food is increasing," says Lomac. "The pantry is now serving about 475 people each month with the help of about 60 pantry volunteers, local farmers, local businesses, the Sandhills Food Bank and the seven local churches involved. This contribution will really be a big help."

The Rev. Chuck Plowman of the Carthage Food Pantry was on hand to accept a $1,500 donation for the Carthage Food Pantry, also an all-volunteer organization that began giving boxes of food to folks in need seven years ago. Food is distributed each first and third Saturday in the parking lot of the Carthage Town Hall.

"We give away 150 to 175 boxes of food every other Saturday," says Plowman. "Each box usually contains at least 30 pounds of food. This contribution will be a big help to those in need that we serve."

"Over the past five years, the Sandhills Classic Street Rod Association has donated about $30,000 to local charities," says Murray. "We are nonprofit and work year-round to do things to help our local communities. It's neat to be able to enjoy the old cars and to help others at the same time."

Presentations were made at Al's 50s Diner in Southern Pines, location of club "Cruise-Ins" held on the first and third Friday evenings of each month and the club's monthly meetings held on the first Monday of each month.
