Vikes Roar Back Against 'Stangs in Volleyball

Spurred on by a spirited home crowd, the Union Pines volleyball team completed a stirring five-set comeback victory over the North Moore Mustangs Wednesday.

In the intra-county non-conference rivalry match, the homestanding Vikings were down two games to one, appearing to be on the ropes after dropping game three by a score of 25-12. But the Vikes, led by Lexi Byrd, Crystal Hicks, Tyler Ross and Morgan Bridgers, fought back to take the final two games of the match. Union Pines (3-7 record) avenged an early-season loss to North Moore (5-3) in claiming the 25-22, 20-25, 12-25, 25-15, 15-9 victory.

Ross, a freshman, had seven digs in game four and spiked down eight of her game high 17 kills over the final two sets. Hicks had 12 kills and 17 digs on the night, while Byrd added 20 digs. Bridgers finished with a 18 assists in the winning Viking effort.

Katelyn Sheffield finished with a match-high 24 digs for North Moore. Jessica Garner and Sammantha Morgan paced the Mustangs strong overall play at the net, each finishing with 13 kills. Garner had 14 assists and 12 digs.
