Penny Black Golf Tourney

The Penny Black Benefit Golf Tournament will be held Sept. 27 at the Elks Club in Southern Pines.

The event will begin at 2 p.m. with a captain's choice format.

Prizes will be awarded for top three teams, closest to the pin and longest drive. There will be door prizes also.

Cost is $60 per player.

Tiger shots (maximum four per team), and mulligans (max two per player) will be sold for $20 and $5 respectively.

There will also be a 50/50 raffle.

Softball Registration

The Carolina Breeze Softball Organization will be holding tryouts for its 10u, 12u and 14u teams at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at Pinecrest High School.

These teams are forming now for play this fall and for next season.

The Breeze will be fielding teams in 10u thru 18u next season.

Youth Tennis Lessons

The Pinehurst Parks and Recreation Department is offering Youth Tennis Lessons for boys and girls ages 6 15.

Lessons are co-sponsored with the Pinehurst Tennis Club and Sandhills Tennis Association.

Jon Fondrie will teach youth the basics of the game, including proper grip, forehand and backhand strokes, serves, and volleys.

Youth should wear tennis shoes and bring their own racket to this class, which meets at the Pinehurst Tennis Club.

Classes will be held Thursdays, Sept. 10 Oct. 1, with ages 6 9 from 5:30 6:30 p.m., ages 10 15 from 6:30 7:30 p.m.

The cost for this program is $5 for Pinehurst residents, $10 for non-residents.

Adult Tennis Lessons

The Pinehurst Parks and Recreation Department is offering Adult Tennis Lessons.

These lessons are co-sponsored with the Pinehurst Tennis Club and will teach participants the fundamentals of tennis, including proper grip, ground strokes, serves, and volleys.

Classes will be held on courts 13 and 14 at the Pinehurst Tennis Club, Mondays, Sept. 14 Oct. 5. Beginner classes will be held between 5:45 and 6:45 p.m., with advanced beginners held between 6:45 and 7:45 p.m.

The cost for these lessons is $22 for Pinehurst residents, $44 for non-residents.

Adult Golf Lessons

The Pinehurst Parks and Recreation Department is offering adult golf lessons. Thomas Coleman is the instructor.

Participants should bring their own clubs or check out a set from the Recreation Department.

Lessons will be held at the Pinehurst Harness Track on the half-mile track infield (next to The Fair Barn), and will be held Monday evenings, Sept. 14 Oct. 5. A beginner class will be held 5:30-6:30 p.m., with an advanced beginner class held 6:30-7:30 p.m.

The cost for this program is $25 for Pinehurst residents, $50 for non-residents.

Punt Pass and Kick

The Pinehurst Parks and Recreation Department is offering an NFL Punt, Pass, and Kick competition.

This free program, co-sponsored with the Southern Pines, and Aberdeen Recreation Departments, is for boys and girls to compete separately in punting, passing and place kicking skills.

The competition is divided into four age divisions: 8-9, 10-11, 12-13 and 14-15.

It will be held at at 6 p.m. on Sept. 16 at the Memorial ballfields in Southern Pines.

All participants must bring a birth certificate for age verification. Age will be determined as of Dec. 31, 2009.

Winners in each boys and girls age division will advance to sectional competition. Participants may enter only one local competition and entry forms can be picked up at the Village Hall.

No football shoes, cleats or turf shoes are permitted. Tennis shoes must be worn by all participants.

Manna! Golf Tournament

The Manna! on the Links Golf tournament will be held on Monday, Sept. 21, at The National Golf Club. The tournament will be a captain's choice.

Early registration is encouraged as space is limited.

Tournament begins at 1 p.m. with registration set for 11:30 a.m.

Cost is $100 per player.

Box lunches, snacks and post-play refreshments provided. Prizes, including a chance to win $1 million, will be available.

Wounded Warriors Golf Event

A golf fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior Project will be held Sept. 11 at Beacon Ridge Golf and Country Club in Seven Lakes.

Entry fee is $75 and includes golf, cart and lunch.

Hole sponsorship is available for $100.

Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m., with a shotgun start slated for 9:30.

Youth Lacrosse Camp

The Pinehurst Parks and Recreation Department is offering a Youth Lacrosse camp for youth ages 7 18.

Academy Lacrosse will instruct participants on the basic skills of the game.

The camp will be held from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Sept. 19, on the Field 1 outfield at Cannon Park

There will be a one-hour break for lunch.

Participants will need a helmet with protective mask, gloves, cup, mouthpiece, shoulder, arm, and elbow pads, and a lacrosse stick.

Junior Tennis Tourney

At Seven Lakes CC

The Seven Lakes CC Tennis Center is hosting the McDonald's Junior Future Tennis Tournament Oct. 2-4.

This tournament is open to boys and girls ages 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18, who are USTA members.

Registration must be completed by Sunday, Sept. 27.

Fall Machine Pitch Baseball

Southern Pines is registering children ages 6 to 8 (age as of Aug. 1, 2009) for its fall machine pitch baseball league.

Emphasis is on fundamentals, teamwork, sportsmanship and fun.

Must register by 5 p.m. Sept. 10. Fee: $10 for Southern Pines residents; $25 nonresidents.

Coaches will call with practice information.

Games will be on Mondays and Wednesday evenings, with practices on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Adult Flag-Football League

Southern Pines is taking registrations for a 7-on-7 adult flag football league.

A captain's meeting will be held at 6 p.m., Sept. 24, at the Train House in Southern Pines.

Players must be age 18 or older by Oct. 1, 2009.

Kiwanis Club Golf Tourney

The Kiwanis Club of Fayetteville will sponsor a Captain's Choice Golf Tournament on Sept. 17 at Cypress Lakes Golf Course with proceeds benefiting the Child Advocacy Center.

Check-in time is 11:30 a.m. to noon, followed by opening ceremonies. Play begins at 1 p.m.

Prizes will be awarded for a variety of scores, including teams finishing in first, middle and last places.

Individuals and teams are welcome.

Registration is $100 for individual golfers or $350 for teams of four.

Hole sponsorships are available for $100 each or $450 for a team of players with one hole sponsorship.

2009 Youth Fitness Camp

A fall break fitness camp for children in graded K-5 will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sept. 28 to Oct. 2 at the FirstHealth Center for Health and Fitness in Pinehurst.
