The Sandhills Community College won its first game of the season Tuesday. The Flyers defeated Hiwassee Community College, 25-19, 25-18, 25-19 in the first of two matches at the tri-meet Tuesday at Davidson Community College.

In the second match, DCC defeated the Flyers, 19-25, 25-8, 25-20, 25-19.

Against Hiwassee, Bethany Neller had a team-high 16 kills. Stephanie Powell had four aces, Alisha Ritter addede 21 assists, Amber Otkin finished with two blocks and Brittney Karshner (13) and Otkin (9) led the team in digs.

The win was the first in the collegiate ranks for new coach Alicia Hill.

"We came away with a win and that was awesome," the coach said.

Against conference foe Davidson CC, Hill called her team's play inconsistent and said playing back-to-back matches may have fatigued her team.

"We played good at times, but just couldn't seem to keep the lead. When we were ready to fight back it seemed to always be too late."

Otkin led the team with nine kills against DCC. Neller and Sarah Thomas each had three aces.

The Flyers (1-2) return to action on Sept. 9 when they host Rockingham Community College at 7 p.m.
