UNC sophomore Jack Fields of Southern Pines shot a tournament record round of 63 on Saturday afternoon at the UNC Greensboro Bridgestone Golf Collegiate.
The Pinecrest graduate made two eagles and six birdies at Forest Oaks Country Club. Combined with a 72 in the morning, he finished the first day in a tie for the lead. In Sunday's final round, he posted a 71 to finish in a tie for second place with an 11-under par 54-hole total of 72-63-71-206.
The 63 was also the lowest competitive round in the history of UNC men's golf and the second by Fields in tournament play. It matched his final round score in June of 2008 when he came from seven strokes back to win the North Carolina Amateur at Raleigh County Club.
Tar Heel teammate Michael McGowan, a freshman and O'Neal School graduate, finished 58th after rounds of 75-75-75-225. UNCG was led by a third golfer from Southern Pines. Freshman Robert Hoadley, a Union Pines graduate, finished in a tie for 22nd place with a 1-under par total of 72-71-72-215.
Amory Davis of the University of Virginia nipped Fields by one stroke for medalist honors. The Tar Heels finished sixth and UNCG came in 12th in the 15-team event won by Georgia Tech.
