Sports Briefs: Falcons Compete in XC Finals

The O'Neal School boys and girls cross country teams ran on Wednesday at the Cape Fear Independent Conference championship meet hosted by Fayetteville Academy.
The boys team was led by sophomore Austin Puleo, who finished ninth overall with a time of 18:01, a performance which ranks him fourth all-time on the O'Neal boys cross country records list. He also achieved All-Conference honors. Austin was followed by Evan Davies (13th, 18:44), Ian Maynor (25th, 19:32), Zeb Viskovich (28th, 19:48), captain Tommy Miller (31st, 20:03) and Mark Pracht (36th, 20:59), all of whome posted personal bests. The boys team finished fourth of five teams with a total of 107 points.
Finishing first for the O'Neal girls team was eighth-grader Mulloy Manning, who finished 12th overall with a time of 22:53. She was followed by captain Blair Puleo (13th, 23:09), Alana Godbey (20th, 24:21), Whitney Cutler (23rd, 24:37), Micaela Wilkinson (28th, 25:32) and Leslea Everett (29th, 25:45). The girls team finished fourth of five teams with a total of 96 points.
Mustangs Roll
North Moore's boys soccer team ran away with a 9-0 victory over visiting South Davidson on Thursday.
Oscar Ramirez opened the scoring in the first five minutes of play. From there, Luis Peralta added another hat trick before the halftime buzzer sounded to give the Mustangs a 4-0 lead at the break.
With his sixth hat trick of the season, Luis Peralta now has 27 goals on the season and is three goals away from breaking North Moore's single-season scoring record.
Abraham Juan added a goal and an assist, and Edgar Cabrera, Oliver Castrejon (2) and Eduardo Gonzalez also had goals.
The Mustangs are back in action Monday at North Rowan. They then host North Rowan Wednesday in their regular season finale.
O'Neal Tennis Splits
The O'Neal School varsity girls tennis team traveled to Fayetteville Academy and came away with a 9-0 victory Tuesday.
In singles competition, Brianna Ek defeated Jessica Morales 6-0, 6-0, Katie Jenkins defeated Kristen Chandria 6-0, 6-1, Amelia Schirmer defeated Christina Sumner 6-2, 6-0, Mary Garner defeated Sita Chandra 6-0, 6-0, Virginia Scarpa defeated Haylee Bigbee 6-2, 6-0 and Victoria Scarpa defeated Emily Hobgood 6-0, 6-0. Greyson Keel played two exhibition matches against Ardu Patel and Lauren Dawson and won both 6-0.
In doubles, Ek and Jenkins defeated Morales and Chandria 8-2, Schirmer and Garner defeated McConnell and Sumner 8-1 and Scarpa and Scarpa defeated Bigbee and Hobgood 8-0.
On Thursday, the Lady Falcons hosted Village Christian and dropped a 5-4 match.
Ek and Jenkins fell in third-set tiebreakers in the No.s 1 and 2 matches. O'Neal's Schirmer won 7-5, 2-6 (10-4) at No. 3 singles, and Victoria Scarpa also won in singles play, 6-2, 6-3.
The Lady Falcons won two of three doubles matches.
O'Neal moved to 10-5 overall and 6-4 in the Cape Fear Independent Conference with the results. Village (12-3, 7-2) took second place in the final conference standings, while O'Neal finished third.
O'Neal plays their final home match of the season Monday against Westchester Country Day in advance of the NCISAA state championships Oct. 29-31 in Wilmington.
QB Club Guest Night
The Woodlake Quarterback Club will hold its second Guest Night of the year Oct. 28 at Valenti's Restaurant in Vass at 6:30 p.m., not Oct. 21 as was reported in the Sports and Recreation Calendar on Wednesday.
