A Pinehurst woman died Monday morning in a four-car wreck on Airport Road near an entrance to Sandhills Community College.
Sheila Wilkerson, 47, was pronounced dead at the scene, said Lt. Rodney Hardy of the Southern Pines Police Department.
Wilkerson was traveling east on Airport Road in a 2006 Mitsubishi when she rear-ended a 1999 Ford sport utility vehicle being driven by Roberta McRae, 32, of Aberdeen, Hardy said. McRae's car went off the road into some bushes, while Wilkerson's car slid down the road before overturning.
McRae was transported to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital. No information about her condition was available.
Wilkerson's car then hit a 2001 Dodge van being driven by Dorothy Maceluch, 33, of Montgomery County, before coming to a stop, Hardy said.
The collision forced Maceluch's car into a vehicle behind her, a 1991 Honda passenger car being driven by Joe Wainwight of Vass.
The accident, which happened about 8:30 a.m., closed Airport Road for several hours. The accident is still under investigation, Hardy said
