Vikes Advance in Tennis Playoffs

The Union Pines Vikings defeated Washington High School 7-2 in opening round of the 3-A girls' dual team tennis playoffs Monday.
The visiting Vikes won the singles portion of the match 5-1 to clinch the victory, dealing Washington (13-1) its only loss of the season in the process. Union Pines singles' winners were Neena Wanko (6-0, 6-1), Melissa Tally (7-5, 6-1), Jordan Smith (6-1, 6-1), Madison Kramer (6-4, 6-1) and Laura Cameron (6-4, 6-2).
Union Pines doubles' winners were Wanko-Smith (6-2) and Tally- Kramer (6-1)
Wanko, a senior, is now 99-4 in her three-year Viking career, while Smith, also a senior, improved her Union Pines' career record to 97-12.
The Vikings are now 12-0 on the season, as they advance to the second round of the team playoffs. They will travel to Rocky Mount to face the Gryphons (16-4), the Big East conference top seed, in round two on Tuesday.
Union Pines hosts the 3-A Mid-East individual regional tournament on Friday and Saturday in Cameron.
