Patriot Harriers Sweep League Honors
The Pinecrest girls and boys blazed a trail around the 5K Southern Pines Country Club Elks' course in Tuesday's Southeastern Conference cross country championship meet.
Seniors Lexie Schustrom and Ashley Brock finished first and second for the Patriot girls, with both breaking the previous course record. The Patriot girls finished first with a perfect team score of 15, winning their 18th league title in a row.
Schustrom earned conference runner of the year honors for the second consecutive year. Her time of 19:55 and Brock's time of 20:22 both broke the previous course mark of 20:25 set by Schustrom at the Patriot Run meet 10 days ago.
Patriot senior Craig Baggett won the boys' race in 18:01 and also earned runner of the year honors. He matched the accomplishment of his brother Brett, who won the race and the same honor in 2007.
Teammate Nathan Frederique was the runner-up as the Patriot boys also posted a perfect score of 15. They had a 14-year run of conference titles interrupted by Jack Britt last year.
The top 14 finishers among the designated varsity runners earned all-conference honors. In addition to Schustrom and Brock, the Patriot girls earning that distinction were Jennie Cunningham, third (21:15), Sarah Lindsay Pressley, fourth (21:24), Haley Germain, fifth (21:31), Alexa Zoellner, sixth (21:48), Caitlin Walsh, seventh (22:09), Madison Hart, ninth (22:45), Kara Zoellner, 10th (22:53), and Olivia Hernandez, 11th (23:19).
