Sandhills Patriots Take Three in Football

The Sandhills Patriot football teams swept three games at home this past weekend. All three teams will be in action Saturday at Pinecrest High School. The prep team (ages 7-9) begin at 12:45 p.m. with the jayvee team (ages 10-11) play at 1:45 p.m. and the varsity (ages 12-13) starts at 3 p.m. All three teams will play the University Jaguars.
Below is a summary of the home-opening games.
Patriot Preps 22, Carmel Raiders 0
Mason Wagner etched his name into the history books Saturday.
The 9-year-old running back took a handoff in his game against the Carmel Raider prep team and rumbled into the end zone for a five-yard touchdown, providing the first ever score on the new Optimist field in Southern Pines.
Wagner's run also set the tone for game as the Sandhills Patriots prep team earned the first win on the new field by defeating the Carmel Raiders preps, 22-0.
Receiver Canaan Helton scored two touchdowns, while Jordan Moss and Nik Pry added conversions to improve the Patriots to 5-0 on the season. Jayden McKnight had two carries on the day for 14 yards.
The Patriots' offensive line was anchored by the solid play of Kyle Ehlers, Matt Coe and Dylan Gray.
Defensively, Jaiklen Blue, Marquez Baxter, Anire Egbe and Jonathon Groff dominated the line of scrimmage, holding the Raiders to one first down.
Patriot Jayvees 24, Carmel Raiders 0
Keegan Good scored three touchdowns and Sam Williams added another to lead the Sandhills Patriots jayvee team to a 24-0 win over the Carmel Raiders jayvees.
Good scored on runs of 80, 40 and 30 yards, while Williams punched one in from three yards out to improve the Patriots to 3-2 on the season.
Austin Wagner, Henry Duncan, Caleb Hendrix and Gregory Bond led the defensive charge with solid tackling.
Punter Kyle Corbett also had a strong afternoon lengthening the field for the Raiders' offense.
Patriot Varsity 46, Carmel Raiders 0
Chance Castillo took the opening kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown and also returned an interception 30 yards for another score as the Sandhills Patriots varsity routed the Carmel Raiders 46-0 in Southern Pines.
Castillo was one of two Patriots to score on special teams. Jared Guden also had a 35-yard punt return for a touchdown.
Defensively, the Patriots (4-0) had four interceptions on the day. Ryan Baker had two picks, one of which was returned 68 yards for a touchdown, and Billy McDougald also had an interception. The Patriots have not given up a score this season.
Quarterback Tristan Helms threw two touchdowns in the game, a 35-yard exchange with McDougald and a 15-yard strike to Jaylen Taylor.
