The Mockingbird, formerly Mary Contrary, in downtown Southern Pines is having a grand opening this Saturday, featuring desserts and raffles of favorite brands from the store and desserts.

In January, Sundi McLaughlin bought Mary Contrary and has slowly been making the shop her own.

"I managed the shop for Mary, and when she decided to close her doors, a wonderful opportunity arose for me," McLaughlin said. "Now I am having the best time searching for fun new items to introduce to my customers."

McLaughlin's customers receive a monthly newsletter on what is new in her store, as well as in the downtown.

"I have the best customers," she said. "I have a wonderful time meeting them and getting to know what they like and what they are looking for."

While some things in the shop have remained, such as the Pine Cone Hill bedding and pajamas and the Park Design dishes, McLaughlin said she has worked hard to find fresh new lines, such as India Rose lanterns ruffled laundry bags and Tokyo Milks perfumes, bubble baths and soaps. She said the store feels happy and vibrant.

"Just like Mary, I want people to have a fun experience when they come into the shop," she said. "I try to always have something funny in the shop that will bring a smile or a laugh."

McLaughlin said she moved to town two years ago and fell in love with the area.

"This is what I always thought a small town should be," she said. "The people are great. The town is beautiful, and we even have a train rolling right though the center of it. I feel like I have finally found my hometown."

McLaughlin moved from Florida where she worked as a deputy. Before that, she operated her own business diving for shells and selling them on the beach in Key West.

She said she brings all of her life experiences to the shop and hopes there is a little something for everyone.

"I am blessed to be working hard and having fun," she said. "What more can you ask for."

The Mockingbird is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
