An animal activist and avid horse person lost her life in a tragic accident last week.

Vicki Burnett, 58, of Pinehurst, died Nov. 18 after falling off a horse she was riding in Hoke County.

Hoke County Sheriff Hubert Peterkin said Burnett was riding alone when the accident occurred. The horse dragged Burnett about 50 feet before it fell to the ground.

Peterkin dispelled the rumor that she also was runover by a truck.

"The horse was dragging her and she ended up under a vehicle, she was not run over," Peterkin said.
