Rusty Wells, of Pinehurst, won the gold medal in the net division of the sixth annual Mid Pines Hickory Open Championship last weekend with a 36-hole score of 70-68-138.

The event, using clubs primarily from the 1920s era with players dressing in plus-fours and ties, drew a field of 57 golfers from 15 states and Canada.

Paul Dietz, of Sarnia, Ontario, finished second to Wells with 139, with Eric Wagner, of Troy, taking third place with 158.

Roger Andrews, of Jenks, Okla., won the Donald Ross Gross Division with 74-78-152. Rick Woeckner, of Woodbridge, Va., was second with 154, with Ted Kopec, of Niceville, Fla., taking third with 158.

Bill Kreischer, of Pinehurst, was 13th with 175, Richard Schmidt, of Southern Pines, shot 176, Todd Collins, of Pinehurst, 177 and Mike Jones, of Southern Pines, 196

Charles McMullin, of Williamsburg, Va., shot 77-78-155 to win the Skip Alexander Gross Division title. Barry Markowitz, of Sanford, claimed the silver medal with 164 in a card playoff over Glenn Davis, of Pinehurst. Mike Strasser, of Pinehurst, tied for 10th with 178 and Hugh Menzies, of Pinehurst, was 19th with 191.

Terry Howarth, of Washington, Pa., won the net division of the Alexander flight with 138, gaining a scorecard playoff over Joseph Whisnant, of Greenville.

Ed and Rick Woeckner teamed to win the gold medal in the Bobby Jones Gross Division, with Dick and Mike Heller taking the prize in the net division.

The Bobby Jones competition is a father-son better-ball competition played in the final round.

Barbara Kopec, of Niceville, Fla., won the gold medal in the Peggy Kirk Bell Ladies Division.

Twelve teams competed in a Foursomes Competition held at Pine Needles on Friday. Tanner Stewart and David Ellis won the Gross Division while Tad Moore and Ted Kopec came in second.

Paul Dietz and Hugh Cameron won the Net Division in the alternate shot affair, with Marty Joy II and Chuck McMullin taking second.

The seventh annual event will be held at Mid Pines and Pine Needles Nov. 5-7, 2010.
