Sandhills Community College's basketball team remained undefeated Saturday with a 90-87 win over the Campbell club team.
The Flyers (6-0) took a 57-39 lead into halftime, but the Camels came storming back in the second half and took an 87-86 lead in the final minute.
Hilary McLaurin was fouled driving to the rim with 29.6 seconds remaining and made both free throws to put SCC back ahead 88-87, and after Campbell was whistled for traveling, Germann Bostic drained two free throws to give the Flyers the win.
McLaurin and Bostic each finished with 19 points and six rebounds to lead Sandhills, and Joe Houpe added a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds.
SCC head coach Aaron Denton attributes his second-year program's early-season success to preparation.
"We had 11 players stay for the summer and work out with our strength coach," he said. "I feel the preparation is beginning to pay off."
Through six games, Bostic has picked up where he left off last season, averaging a team-high 22 points per game.
McLaurin and Houpe, both of whom redshirted last season, are averaging 19.5 and 11.8 points per game, respectively. Wesley Harrell is the team's leading rebounder at eight boards per game.
As a team, the Flyers are averaging 100 points per game.
"Our home games have been exciting, attendance is high and we're looking forward to a great year," Denton said.
The Flyers are back in action today hosting Rockingham at the O'Neal School's Tate Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
