Andy Bare made the most of home cooking last week when he won the first stage of the PGA Qualifier held on Pinewild Country Club's Magnolia Course by shooting 10-under-par 66-70-72-70--278.

Bare, who lives in West End, is no stranger to the award-winning Pinewild course and made the most of the opportunity by jumping out with a 66, which was two strokes better than Dustin Bray, who plays out of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

Bare, who has been one of the better players on the eGolf Tour for the past few years while also competing in some Nationwide events, finished one shot ahead of Jay Woodson, of Richmond, Va., who closed with a 67.

Birdies on 13 and 14 gave Bare the victory, although he stumbled with bogeys on the 199-yard par-3 15th and the 457-yard par-4 17th.

Three other North Carolina players were among the top 21 and advanced to the second stage, They were Jason Kokrak of Charlotte with 282, Brad Fritsch of Holly Springs with 286 and Jerry Richardson of Morrisville with 288.

Jamie Lovemark, of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., also advanced with 286

Patriot Charities: The Patriot Foundation has done it again.

The foundation, a 501c(3) non-profit headed by retired Naval Reserve Captain Chuck Deleot of Southern Pines, works year-round to raise funds for the offspring of 82nd Airborne Division paratroopers killed in combat and children of serving, retired and former Army Special Operations soldiers.

Those efforts this year raised more than $100,000 for the charities, despite a recessionary climate. But the ever enthusiastic Deleot has hopes that those funds will total much more when they are presented at the end of the year.

"We're hoping to come close to doubling that amount when we present it," Deleot said.

The highlight of the fundraising effort is the 54-hole Sunbelt Senior Tour Championship pro-am tournament and dinner held at National Golf Club each October for the past seven years.

There were 170 people at the Saturday night dinner, with 76 golfers participating. Lt. Gen. Lloyd Austin, Director of the Joint Staff at the Pentagon, was the guest speaker.

The 82nd Airborne Chorus performed, although it was smaller than usual due to so many soldiers being deployed, according to Deleot.

"We couldn't come close to raising this much money without our corporate sponsors," Deleot said. "We have to thank Mr. and Mrs. Mike Girimont, Walmart, BB&T Bank, the Restaurant Management Group, Boddie-Noell Enterprises and Prism Medical, Ltd.

"We've also joined with the Folds of Honor Foundation and will help with the Patriot Golf Days in North and South Carolina."
