Pinecrest finished its regular season the same way it started -- with a win.
The Patriots traveled to Hoke County Friday and posted a hard-fought 31-14 win in Southeastern Conference football action to cement the best season in the school's history. The 9-2 record is the most regular-season wins in the history of the school. But now the waiting game begins, as Pinecrest ended up in a three-way tie for second in the conference. Lumberton, Purnell Swett and Pinecrest all ended up with 3-2 conference marks. The final seedings for playoff purposes are going to be based on the luck of the draw, as the three schools are going to break the tie based on pulling straws.
Pinecrest beat Purnell Swett and lost to Lumberton, while Purnell Swett beat Lumberton. All three teams lost to Richmond Senior, the winner of the conference title.
But tonight, nothing could stop the Patriots in setting the school record for wins.
Pinecrest broke out to a 17-0 lead, only to see Hoke cut it to a 17-14 margin early in the fourth quarter. Pinecrest used a 38-yard fumble return to go ahead 24-14 and then added another score to post the final 31-14 score.
