PHS's Schustrom Wins Regional

Pinecrest's Lexie Schustrom added a 4A East Regional cross country title to her long list of running accomplishments on Saturday morning at South View High School.

The Patriot senior led the entire race and wrapped it up with a strong kick over the final 400 meters. She covered the 5,000-kilometer course in 18:38, beating her closest pursuer, Ashley Matthews of West Johnston, to the finish line by eight seconds.

Teammates finishing in the top 10 were senior Ashley Brock, ninth (19:39) and freshman Jennie Cunningham, 10th (19:44).

The Patriot girls finished third and the boys were fourth, qualifying both as teams for Saturday's 4A state championship meet at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons. Terry Sanford won the girls team title and West Johnston was the boys champion.

All seven Patriot girls finished in the top 35 in the field of 141 runners. The others were Haley Germain, 27th (20:39), Sarah Lindsay Pressley, 29th (20:45), Alexa Zoellner, 32nd (21:06) and Caitlin Walsh, 35th (21:15).

The boys race was won by Chase Christianson of Terry Sanford in 15:46. The first Patriot to cross the finish line was senior Dalton Allen in 14th place with a time of 16:44. All seven Patriots finished in the top 50 in the field of 160 boys. The others included Tyler Clark, 26th (17:10), Craig Baggett, 28th (17:14), Nathan Frederique, 29th (17:18), Jacob Allen, 32nd (17:25), Jared Walters, 46th (17:57) and Landon Sherwood, 49th (17:59).
