Where to Send Prisoners
In recent days, President Obama seems to have had trouble figuring out what to do with the captured terrorists at Guantanamo Bay.
If he had asked me before he made the decision to close Gitmo, I would have advised him to work the details out before he made the decision, not after. Being a magnanimous fellow, I've decided to offer him some advice anyway:
First, we certainly don't want to transfer them to any place in America. The NIMBY factor (Not In My Back Yard) is running so hot and heavy that even Sen. Harry Reid says we don't want to bring them here. So we need to send them somewhere else.
The administration has asked all our foreign friends if they will take them off our hands, and their predictable answer has been, "Are you kidding?"
With both those options off the table, I suggest we consider sending them to a foreign country with whom we haven't been very friendly over the years. That's my first recommendation.
Second, security is obviously very important in the case of these terrorists, so we need to find a place that is ultra-secure. My recommendation is to send them to a prison that's located inside a military base. What could be more secure than that? If the military base happened to be located on an island, that would be even better. So that's the second part of my recommendation.
So if the president can find a prison inside a military base, on an island, in a country that we don't care much about, that would do it. So there you have it, "H."
(P.S. If you can call my president "W," I can call yours "H.")
