Pinecrest's Lexie Schustrom finished second in the 3,200-meter run at Saturday's NCHSAA 4-A Track and Field Championships held at North Carolina A&T.

Just as at the state indoor championships held in February, the Patriot junior finished as the runner-up to Kimberly Spano, a North Mecklenburg High School senior. Schustrom's time was 11:18, while Spano came in at 11:05.

Spano succeeds former Pinecrest runner, Lauren Bishop, the 2008 state champion in the event, and now a member of the cross country and track teams at N.C. State.

Schustrom won Mid-Southeastern Conference and East Regional titles in the event this season. She also set new Pinecrest standards in the 3,200 (11:08) and the 1,600-meter run (5:07.9).

The only other athlete to earn points for Pinecrest at Saturday's meet was Aaron Shamburger with an eighth-place finish in the 400-meter dash (50.43) won by Eric Winfrey of Douglas Byrd (47.77).

Shamburger closed out his senior season with a rush after posting a qualifying time for the regional meet with a third-place finish in the conference championships. He was fourth at the East Regional and ran a personal best of 49.82 during Saturday's preliminary heats.

The New Bern boys won their fourth state title in a row, finishing six points in front of Mount Tabor. The Southeast Raleigh girls were first by the same margin over Myers Park.
