O'Neal Eighth In State Tennis Tournament

The O'Neal boys' tennis team finished eighth in the NCISAA 2A State Tournament held in Gastonia this past weekend.

Cape Fear won the state tournament with 31 points. St. David's was runner-up with 24. O'Neal finished with five points.

Cape Fear and St. David's -- the only two teams to beat O'Neal during the regular season -- dominated the field. Cape Fear won five of the nine flights and St. David's won the other four.

For the Falcons, Garrett Klumpar lost to Clayton Brewer of Westchester Country Day, 6-1, 7-5.

Austen Hasty dropped a 6-2, 6-1 match to Alex Payan of Westchester Country Day. Corbin O'Donnell lost his match to Richard Lindemans of Gaston Day School, 6-3, 6-1.

Davis Tucker of Westchester Country Day defeated O'Neal's Derek Wold, 6-1, 6-1; Alex Shore topped Luke Vandeplancke (WCDS), 6-1, 6-1, before losing to Adam Nagar of Spartanburg Day School, 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3. Matthew Friesen of O'Neal won a second round match with Taylor Garrido of Gaston Day School, 6-3, 7-6 (6) before losing to event state champion Andrew Schuett of Cape Fear, 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles Klumpar and Evan Davies of O'Neal lost to a doubles team from Rocky Mount Academy, 6-1, 1-6 and 6-4.

In the second doubles, Hasty and Shore lost another close match, 6-4, 6-4 to a team from Arendell Parrott Academy.

In third doubles Wold and O'Donnell defeated a team from Southlake Christian Academy, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, before losing in the second round to a team from Cape Fear Academy, 6-1, 6-3.

The Falcons finished the regular season with a 7-4 mark and a runner-up finish in the Cape Fear Independent Conference.
