A Carthage woman accidentiality shot herself in the abdomen Saturday night, police said.

Police responded to reports of a gunshot about 8:17 p.m. and found that a 46-year-old woman had apparently shot herself by accident, though investigation of the incident is continuing.

Edna Ketchum was airlifted to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill for treatment of a self-inflicted wound to her abdomen, according to the police report.

"I think they did some exploratory surgery, but she is all right and has been released from the hospital," said Police Chief Chris McKenzie. "There was no indication anybody else was involved."
