Gnats Struggle On Road

Last weekend all three Sand Gnat semi-pro baseball teams took to the road and came up 0-2-1.

The 21 Gnats played the Raleigh Capitals to a 10-10 tie. Going into the 9th with a four-run lead, the Gnats allowed walks and errors to be the major contributors to this comeback.

The Gnats' Aaron Cain and Chris Nolan hit home runs, but it wasn't enough to overcome four homers hit by the homestanding Capitals. Despite the tie, the 21 Gnats are tied for first play in the division with a 2-0-1 record. Through three games, Chris Nolan is 2-0 with a 3.55 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings. Jason Goodwin has yet to allow an earned run in 12 innings of work while striking out 15. William Garner, a player coach on the team is its leading hitter with a .625 batting average and five RBIs. Outfielder Adam Friede has a .600 batting average with six runs scored and five stolen bases.

The 35 Gnats (1-2) took on the Carolina Brewers and the national leader two years in a row in strikeouts. The Brewers won the game, 10-0. Dan Kopitzke fanned 13 in six innings.

John Meygas is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 12 innings. Jason Lowe is leading the offense for the 35 Gnats with a .667 batting average. Pike Nordgren is batting .600 with five runs and three RBIs, and Ray Hutchens and Art Morfin are each batting .545 with a combined five RBIs and six runs.

The 45 Gnats (0-2-1) remained winless after another close loss. The Apex Athletics defeated the Gnats, 8-7.

Pitching leader for the 45 Gnats is Dennis Johnson, who is 0-1 with a 4.85 ERA with 11 strikeouts in 13 innings pitched.

Wayne Garner is leading the offense for the 45 Gnats. He is batting .583 with eight runs and three RBIs. Eric Norton is batting .438 with seven RBIs, five runs and four stolen bases. Jeff Rayford is batting .500 with a pair of RBIs an four runs scored.
