Elizabeth Edwards, in a candid interview with Oprah Winfrey that is set to be broadcast Thursday, discusses the infidelity of her husband, her battle with terminal cancer and her soon-to-be released memoir "Resilience."
Elizabeth Edwards said there was only one thing that she asked John Edwards when they discussed marriage 31 years ago: that he be faithful to her.
John Edwards, who grew up in Robbins and served as a U.S. senator from North Carolina, had a mercurial rise in the Democratic Party when he was John Kerry's running mate in the 2004 presidential campaign. He admitted to an extramarital affair with Rielle Hunter during his 2008 campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.
The candid, no-holds-barred interview took place at the Edwards' sprawling Chapel Hill home. John Edwards was also interviewed by Winfrey.
Asked if she still loved her husband, Edwards said, "That is a complicated question."
At one point in the interview, she points out that she doesn't like to wear a lot of jewelry and notes that she isn't wearing her wedding ring because she had "jammed her finger."
She tells Winfrey that her husband said that Hunter approached him, meeting him in front of a hotel and telling him, "You are so hot."
In clips of the interview, Elizabeth Edwards comes across as very calm, sturdy and painfully honest, much the same as she came across while supporting her husband during his various bids for political office and her battle with terminal cancer.
