Patriot Players Earn Hoops Honors

Pinecrest basketball players Jarrin Wooten and Josh Scales have been named to the Mid-Southeastern Conference all-league team for the second time in their Patriot careers.

Wooten also earned first team All-District 8 recognition, and Scales made the second team. Patriot coach Mike Apple was named the District 8 Coach of the Year.

Wooten, a 6-foot-5 senior, finished his varsity basketball career as a member of Pinecrest's 1,000 point club. His four-year varsity totals include 1,030 points and 686 rebounds. This past season he led the team in scoring with a 13.6 per game average and also led in rebounds at eight per game.

Scales, one of the league's best defenders, averaged 9.9 points per game. The 6-1 guard also led the team in threes with 23. He and Wooten have signed scholarships to play college football at Fayetteville State and Winston-Salem State, respectively.

The Patriots finished 19-8 overall in Apple's sixth season as the boys' head coach. It was their third 19-win season in the last four years under Apple, a Union Pines and Guilford College graduate.

In the final year of the Mid-Southeastern Conference, the Pats finished third with a 9-5 mark. They lost 82-76 to New Hanover in the first round of the state playoffs.

Conference Coach of the Year honors went to David Simmons of Seventy-First, the regular season champions. Falcon forward, Kevin Powell, was named Player of the Year. Second place Jack Britt won the conference tournament and advanced all the way to the 4-A East Regional final last weekend before losing to Terry Sanford.

The all-conference squad selected by the coaches also includes: Preston Ross and Charles Benjamin, Seventy-First; Brandon Nichols, Kevin Bobson and Xavier Nixon, Jack Britt; James Robinson and Mo Covington, Scotland County; Brandon Smith, Douglas Byrd; Ewon Wright, Westover; and DeMarquell McLean, Hoke County.

Honorable mention selections were: Dock McNair and Malcolm Rowe, Douglas Byrd; Dominique Clark, Scotland; and Andre Jones, Seventy-First.

Team awards were presented during Pinecrest's team banquet this week.

Wooten was named the best offensive player and Scales took the honor as the best defensive player. Senior Laquan McCullough received the Coaches Award. Scales was honored as the Best Teammate. Captain pins were presented to Wooten and senior John Kropp.

The seniors on the team were Wooten, Scales, McCullough, Tony Allbrooks, Jahrelle Person, Kropp and Evan Cole.

Pinecrest scored at a 68.1 point per game pace and allowed 61.5 points per game. Other statistical leaders include: Field goal percentage Julian Brewer (50.0); Free throw percentage Person (76.9); Assists Cedrick Threadgill (64); Steals Allbrooks (38).
