Amtrak Is Pleasant Compared to Planes

Two contributors to The Pilot recently were very unhappy with their experiences traveling Amtrak. Having recently taken two trips via train, plus four last year, I share my thoughts, which are very positive.

I concede that the train was about 40 minutes late coming into Southern Pines, but that was welcome to me, since it was scheduled for 7:06 a.m. And when I called to check the status, I was given the correct information.

My seatmates both times this year were delightful ladies. The first, a 92-year-old woman, kept me entertained with her tales of trips all over the United States -- alone! The second was an 82-year-old woman who was also very agreeable and even offered to share her sandwich!

I have traveled quite frequently by plane in the past but have become disenchanted for several reasons. First, since the Southern Pines airport closed, it's been a long drive to Raleigh. Then, since a hip replacement a couple of years ago, I must submit to both wanding and patting down!

I enjoy the roominess of the large seats on the train vs. being packed in like sardines on the plane. In addition, I spend time in the lounge car with coffee, etc., and my ever-present book. Usually pleasant people are there to pass the time with. If not, back to my book!

Of course, if you're in a hurry, you can't beat the plane, but being retired I prefer the slower pace and amenities of Amtrak.

I would love to have some of that stimulus money go to giving us the high-speed trains available in Europe. Wouldn't this project be a great boost for our economy? I know our president is in favor!
