SANDHILLS BEST BETS: Local Chef Featured At Market

The Moore County Farmers Market Association welcomes Chef Rhett Morris, of Rhett's Restaurant and Catering Service, Saturday morning, June 13, at the downtown Southern Pines location.

Morris will shop the market for ingredients and then prepare delicious samples featuring locally grown greens.

"Come and sample his creative use of these nutritious vegetables between 9:30 and 11 a.m.," says a spokesman. "Recipes will be provided for the dish Chef Rhett prepares."

The Farmers Market is open from 8 a.m. until noon each Saturday morning through September at the corner of SE Broad Street and New York Avenue.

Each month a different local chef will be featured at the downtown market.

Bluegrass Festival

The sixth annual Malcolm Blue Farm and Museum Bluegrass Festival will take place Saturday, June 13, from 1 to 8 p.m.

"Enjoy savory vittles and down-home music, browse a few local artisans during this annual family event," says a spokesman.

Bands include the Bluegrass Tar Heels, McFarland Road, Thickety Creek, and Potter's Wheel.

The Quick Silver Cloggers will also perform. Buddy Spong will be the master of ceremonies.

Admission is $6 for adults; $3 for children 12 and under; preschool children are admitted free of charge.

Meet the Author

The Country Bookshop, Southern Pines, will host a Meet the Author event featuring Cathy Holton, author of "Beach Trip," at 3 p.m. Friday, June 12.

Patti Callahan Henry, author of "Driftwood Summer," will be at the Bookshop at 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 17.

Russian Missionaries

The Rev. Cecil Eshelman, and his wife, Tonya, missionaries to Russia, will speak at Lighthouse Assembly of God at 6 p.m. Sunday, June 14.

Tonya Eshelman was born and raised in Siberia.

American-born Cecil Eshelman met her while serving as a missionary in Russia and Mongolia.

They have returned from serving three years in Khabarovsk, a city in the Russian Far East.

The church is located on N.C. 24-27, one mile west of the courthouse, in Carthage.

Discovery Hike

Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve will host a Discovery Hike at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 14.

"We will look at flowers, shrubs, bugs, birds, frogs, toads, lizards, snakes, turtles, mammals and anything else we discover," says a spokesman.

The Preserve is located on Fort Bragg Road, Southern Pines.
