SANDHILLS BEST BETS: NAMI Hosts Educational Meeting

NAMI-MC (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is hosting an educational and support meeting Monday, Aug. 3, at 7 p.m. at the FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital Conference Center, Room A.

This meeting is free and the public is invited. The subject will be mental depression.

Thirty minutes of excerpts for the PBS project, "Depression: Out of the Shadows," will be shown and followed by a question-and-answer session with Dr. Suzanne Martin, a clinical psychologist with FirstHealth Outpatient Behavioral Services.

'Free' Yard Sale

Red Branch Baptist Church will be having its annual Free Yard Sale from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 1.

They will be giving away clothes, books and other household items.

Doll Show

There will be a doll show and sale from 9:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Holiday Inn Bordeaux Expo Center, 1707 Owen Drive, Fayetteville. Admission is $5; children are admitted free under age 12. Ongoing raffles will benefit local charities.

Lawnmower Racing

There will be a Lawnmower Race at the Ellerbe Lions Club in Ellerbe on Saturday, Aug. 1. Gate opens at 4 p.m., and first race begins at 6:30 p.m. Food and concessions will be available. Admission: $5, adults; $2 for school-age children.

Nature Preserve

Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve will present "Winged Gems" at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2.

"Winged Gems" will focus on the butterflies found in the Sandhills. There will be a talk about the ecology and life history of butterflies, followed by a hike.
