There will be a talk about the ecology and life history of butterflies, followed by a hike. Aug. 8, 3 p.m. Bats Learn about the different bats found in the Sandhills and secrets for getting them out of your home. Aug. 15, 3 p.m., Sandhills Squirrels, Nature's Nutcracker Flying, fox and gray squirrels are found in the Sandhills, but they have different lifestyles. Learn about the adaptations and life histories of these rodents. Aug. 23, 3 p.m., After the Fire It may be hot, but there are some very cool things to see, especially in areas that have been recently burned. Learn firsthand the crucial role fire plays in maintaining the longleaf pine forest. One-mile hike to look at how plants and animals adapt to this ecological process. Aug. 30, 3 p.m., Woodcleavers and Yellow-hammers, local names for two woodpeckers, the pileated woodpecker and the northern flicker. Eight species of woodpeckers appear in the Sandhills. Learn more about these birds and the important role they play in our longleaf forest.

Visitors can indulge their botanical interest while enjoying a stroll through the 32-acre Sandhills Horticultural Gardens on the campus of Sandhills Community College.
