If you're a tournament golfer, now's the time start signing up. No matter what kind of action you're looking for, it's just an entry form away.
Like a good scramble? Try the First Bank Coalition Classic, the Moore Buddies or the Doug Smith Memorial Scholarship tournaments. Like great competition? Get in line for the Moore County Amateur Championship or the Gates Four Golf and Country Club Invitational in Fayetteville. Want a twist in your format? Try the Wounded Warrior, where it's a captain's choice step-aside.
The Coalition Classic, a captain's choice event being played at National Golf Club, is on tap Monday at 9 a.m., so you have to hurry to play in it. The coalition provided financial aid for heat, rent, water and electricity in the amount of $367,000 in 2008, has 278 active volunteers and served a total of 6,171 clients last year.
The entry fee is $150 per player and includes carts, refreshments, breakfast, lunch, awards and door prizes. Call 693-1600 right now to see if there's still an opening.
The Gates Four event is coming up next, scheduled for Aug. 8-9.
This tournament, which is making a comeback among the better golfers in the area after a downturn in recent years, annually draws a strong field. Former champions include some of the top amateurs in the state.
The entry fee is $115 and includes 36 holes of championship golf, greens fees for a practice round, range balls, a Saturday steak cookout and trophy and gift certificates. The deadline for entries is Aug. 6.
The open division will play from the blue tees on Saturday, with the senior Division (50-65) playing from the white tees. Super Seniors (66 and over) will play from the silver tees.
Sunday's final round will be played from the championship tees in the top two flights in the Open Division, while the other flights will play from the blue tees.
Seniors and super seniors compete only in their flight and are not eligible for the overall championship. The overall champion will receive the J.P. Riddle Cup and gift certificates will be awarded to the first four places in each flight.
For information or to enter, call head professional Bobby Cooke at 425-2176.
It's a shame that the Moore Amateur and the Moore Buddies events are going head to head this year.
The county championship is being played at Legacy Golf Links Aug. 22-23 and has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity since the field has been opened to include any eligible amateurs regardless of their residency.
Sherrill Britt is the defending champion and recently served notice that his game is as sharp as ever by shooting a 59 at Southern Pines Golf Club. The Moore Amateur has become a strong supporter of The First Tee of the Sandhills and net proceeds from the event will be donated for the educational and character development programs for junior golfers.
Last year's tournament and designated donations provided more than $3,000 to the local chapter.
The 68th annual Moore Men's event is closing entries Aug. 15, so time is of essence. This is a 36-hole stroke play tournament with the field flighted after Saturday's round.
The entry fee is $99 and includes cart, range balls and lunch on Saturday. There are three divisions scheduled -- open, senior and super senior. Shotgun starts will be held both Saturday and Sunday at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. A minimum of three prizes will be awarded in each flight.
Players may make up their own pairings for the Saturday round. For information or to enter, call 944-2757.
The 13th annual Rigsby-Clark Cup for Moore Buddies sponsored by Mac's Food Stores will be held at the Pit Golf Links Aug. 22. Because of the large field, a double shotgun start is being held at 8:30 a.m. and at 2 p.m.
The entry fee is $85 per player for the morning shotgun start, and $75 for the afternoon. Moore Buddies is a nonprofit agency in Moore County that works directly with the community to serve youth who are in need.
Sponsorships ranging from $100 to $1,000 are still available. For information or to enter, call 400-5236.
The Golf for Wounded Warrior Project tournament will be held at Beacon Ridge Golf and Country Club in Seven Lakes Sept. 11.
The benefit event is scheduled for a 9:30 shotgun start, and the entry fee is $75, which includes carts and lunch. Hole sponsorships are available for $100.
For information, call Steve Auditore at 673-3059, or e-mail him at Stevebogeyman@yahoo.com.
Those who remember the late Doug Smith can contribute to his memory by entering the memorial event being played at Whispering Woods Golf Club Sept. 26 at 8 a.m.
The entry fee is $75 and includes cart, lunch and contribution to the Memorial Scholarship Fund. There will be first and second place winners in gross and net divisions, plus closest-to-the-pin and longest drive prizes.
Presented by Match Play of Pinehurst, the golf equipment and repair shop that Smith ran for many years in Southern Pines, the tournament awarded two $1,000 scholarships last year to seniors at Union pines and Pinecrest High Schools, and a $2,000 scholarship to a graduate at North Moore High.
Hole sponsorships are available for $100, and a special buffet will be served following play. For information or to enter, call 692-3741.
So there it is, enough tournament golf to get you through until fall. Go for it and help some needy causes while you're enjoying yourself.
