The second in a series of three hunter shows took place at Mel Wyatt's Foxtrack Training Center in Southern Pines July 18. Two rings ran simultaneously in order to accommodate the large number of children and adult riders.

Jane Demeulemester of Southern Pines rode Kathy Bennett's seasoned hunter Simpson Bay to capture a low hunter over fences class. Bennett won the other low over fences class riding Make My Day.

Betty Poyser's flashy paint horse, Sir Norman, dominated the Junior/Adult over fences classes winning both classes with Halie Jackson in the irons.

In the children's division, Henry Spencer was the only novice rider to canter the maiden hunter over fences class. Spencer won the class with his pony Oliver.

The Busch family, (Charlotte, Caroline and brother Andrew) was in Southern Pines visiting Henry Spencer. The Busches enjoyed their lessons at Foxtrack so much that they begged their parents to postpone their flight home to Chicago so they could compete in the Foxtrack Horse Show. It proved to be a good decision as they took home numerous ribbons. Charlotte Busch won the Maiden Equitation class and the Maiden Hunter class riding Foxtrack Raffles. Sister Caroline was second in the Maiden Hunter class. Brother Andrew, who started riding only the Monday before the show, came in fourth in the Beginner Walk Trot class. Andrew piloted Foxtrack's Freckles around the ring completely on his own with no help from a lead-line.

According to organizer Mel Wyatt, judges Bill West and Elizabeth Rose both commented on how the caliber of riding had improved from the first show. "The competitors who won at the first show were the ones who made the least mistakes," said Wyatt. "At this show, everyone got their diagonals and their leads. Both judges asked riders to do simple tests to determine first place. There are no clear leaders in any division for the series championships so it all rests on the last show."

Look for more challenging courses at the next show which is scheduled for August 22.
