Scots Breeze Past Pat Girls
A hot hand by Scotland County's Megan Brigman, and an injury to top scorer Karmen Spencer, were too much for the Pinecrest girls to overcome in Laurinburg on Tuesday.
Brigman, who scored 31 points in her previous outing against Westover, took right up from where she left off. The senior guard sank four treys and accounted for 16 points as the Scots surged to a 27-14 lead midway through the second period. She scored all 26 of her final output in the first three quarters as the Patriots suffered a 57-28 defeat.
Spencer went down with an ankle injury near the end of the first quarter, depriving the Pats of both her scoring and ball-handling abilities. Teammates Candice Seagraves with nine points, and Addy George with six, led the visitors.
The Patriots (6-12 overall, 2-7 conference) held the Scots (13-4, 6-3) without a point in the fourth quarter. Tonight they entertain Richmond Senior (9-5, 5-4) at 6 p.m.
Falcons Split Games With Village Christian
The O'Neal girls basketball team built a double-digit halftime lead and held on for a 46-40 road win over Village Christian Tuesday.
Sophomore point guard Jennie Joy scored 15 points, recorded 11 steals and had five rebounds. Syd McIlwain added 13 points and 17 rebounds and Kitan Akinosho chipped in nine points and 11 rebounds. The Falcons enjoyed a huge edge on the glass, grabbing 47 rebounds.
O'Neal (13-5) returns home Friday to host Cape Fear Academy in a homecoming game.
Ethan Rogers scored 24 points as Village Christian cruised past O'Neal, 66-50 in boys' basketball. Stephen Clark (13) and Chris Payton (12) led a balance Falcon offense. The loss drops the Falcons to 2-15 on the season.
Vikings Drop Two Road Games at Southern Lee
Amelia Smith's buzzer-beating lay-up capped an 11-3 scoring run and gave the Cavaliers a 49-47 upset win over Union Pines Tuesday. Smith finished with a game-high 16 points and eight rebounds.
Alishia Mosley (13 points) and Lindsey Wilborn (11) were the top scorers for the Vikings, who drop to 13-5 overall and 6-2 in conference. The Cavaliers are 2-12, 2-6.
The Cavalier boys completed the sweep with a convincing 70-61 win. The Cavaliers fell behind 29-23, then scored 37 of the next 48 points to take a 60-40 lead. Akeem Richmond led the victors with 25 points.
Eric Smith led the Viking boys with 20 points. Union Pines dropped to third place in the conference. The Cavaliers are second in the conference.
