In the time it takes to read this, two people will have needed blood, according to the Red Cross.
During the winter months, the blood supply often plummets. The American Red Cross must collect 38,000 units of blood each day to meet patient needs in communities across the United States.
Although all blood types are now needed, Type O Negative is at very critical levels.
Belk in Southern Pines is now recruiting blood donors for its Valentine's Day Drive set for Saturday, Feb. 14. The American Red Cross will be located in the bus in the parking lot in front of Belk from 1:30 to 6 p.m. Appointments can now be made by calling the Red Cross office at 692-8571.
Donors will be eligible to enter a drawing to win one of three pairs of Delta Air Lines Tickets.
In addition to the blood drive, the "Cake Lady," Joy Foster and "It's all goodies" will be at Belk with personalized cakes, cookies and more -- a great addition to many wonderful Valentine gifts that Belk has to offer.
