The Moore Philharmonic Orchestra announces that Mallory Hayes is the winner of this season's Solo Competition.

Hayes competed with other young musicians in Moore County Dec. 6, for the opportunity to perform a solo with the Moore Philharmonic and receive a $500 scholarship that can be used to help her continue to pursue her musical interests.

Hayes is currently a 14-year-old home-school student from Whispering Pines. She has been studying violin for nine years and currently takes instruction from Karen Collins in Greensboro. She participates in several of the Greensboro Youth Symphony ensembles, where she rehearses on Sundays.

"The judges were impressed by Mallory's strength as a performer," says Eric Kopecky, music director of MPO.

Hayes will begin rehearsing with the Moore Philharmonic Orchestra this spring and perform at the spring concert May 11, at Sandhills Community College. Kaitlyn Johnson, a former winner of this competition, placed second this year and will receive a $250 scholarship to help her with her musical advancement.

Rehearsals for the Moore Philharmonic Orchestra's spring concert began in December. There are still opening in all sections of the orchestra, including strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.
